How Satisfied ARE You?

September 20, 2024

and emotions? A great place to start is by considering Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. This model suggests that we need to meet our basic needs (like food, safety, and belonging) before we can experience more profound feelings of satisfaction, joy, and emotional fulfillment.

The Spectrum of Needs

Maslow’s Hierarchy is often represented as a pyramid, with physiological needs (like hunger, thirst, and shelter) at the bottom, and emotional or psychological needs (like love, esteem, and self-fulfillment) at the top. However, I’d argue that this is more of a spectrum than a strict ladder. We don’t always go step by step; instead, we flow back and forth between different levels depending on what’s happening in our lives.

For example, let’s say you’re out running errands and suddenly realize you’re HANGRY. In that moment, your body is telling you to prioritize your physiological need for food. You can’t think about joy, satisfaction, or emotional well-being until you meet that need. But after you’ve had a meal, you might feel more emotionally balanced and able to focus on deeper forms of happiness and connection.

Meeting Your Needs for More Joy

Are you currently feeling satisfied and joyful, or are there needs in your life that are going unmet? Maybe you’re physically active and feeling secure, but you’re lacking a sense of belonging or emotional connection. Or maybe you’re working hard at achieving professional goals but feel burned out and less joyful in your personal life. Wherever you are, it’s important to recognize that we can experience these needs simultaneously, and fulfilling one area often helps us improve in others.

How Satisfied ARE you RIGHT NOW? What needs are being met and which are unfulfilled? Are you ready to DREAM or are you needing some extra care? Take the quiz and gain clarity for some future goal setting!

JOY, LOVE, CARE, RECOGNITION, INTIMACY…these are all emotional and relational needs we as humans have. I argue that we are actually experiencing needs fulfillment alongside intrinsic and extrinsic motivators more on a SPECTRUM and NOT in a hierarchy and I also argue that we are moving across that spectrum ALL THE TIME in a multitude of ways at ANY given time.

We all experience periods where some needs are fulfilled, while others fall short. The important thing is to recognize where you are and give yourself the grace to adjust accordingly. What are you craving right now? Is it more recognition and validation at work, or perhaps more time spent nurturing personal relationships? Or maybe it’s something as simple as getting better rest to feel more energized and joyful during the day.

To help you get a clearer picture of your needs, I encourage you to take the quiz. It’s a quick way to identify areas in your life where you might need extra care and attention—and where you can create space for more happiness and fulfillment.

Why It’s All About the Spectrum

Unlike the rigid pyramid that tells us we need to move step by step, life is fluid. You might be meeting your emotional and relational needs on some days, but find yourself addressing more basic needs on others. We’re always moving, growing, and adjusting, and that’s the beauty of it—there’s no “right way” to get to the top of the pyramid because the top is wherever you feel fulfilled.

Moving Across the Spectrum

Happiness and satisfaction aren’t something we achieve and then “check off” our list. They come and go, ebb and flow, just like our basic needs. And that’s okay. By understanding that our needs—both big and small—are interconnected, we can navigate life with more flexibility and intention. Some days, you may need to prioritize sleep and nourishment, while other days, you’re focused on building relationships or finding joy in hobbies. It’s all part of the process.
